The paprika, or as its more commonly known, pepper plant, originates in South and Central America and is known for its vibrantly-coloured fruits that contain a large number of seeds. These fruits, peppers, have been eaten for over 9000 years – Capsicum annuum was one of the first plants cultivated for food by the pre-Colombian civilizations (the Aztecs, Mayas and Incas). In 1494, Christopher Columbus introduced it into Europe when he returned from his first voyage and from there, it spread rapidly across the world. The peppers are commonly used as a vegetable ingredient or eaten fresh as a side dish. Paprika – the spice obtained when the fruit is dried - is widely used for its colouring properties and appreciated for its peppery flavour, aromatic fragrance and vivid colour.
