Originating from East Africa, the tamarind has gradually spread across the semi-arid and tropical regions of the world. Its magnificent leafy branches offer the perfect shady spot for siestas or for discussions between local wise men, hence its reputation as a sacred tree in certain regions of Africa. While its foliage may help to soothe the mind, all parts of the tree have recognised therapeutic benefits (antiseptic, digestive and febrifuge properties). In the culinary field, the tangy pulp contained in the brown pod of the tamarind fruit is used to make refreshing drinks.
